A Modern Lighting Update for a National Icon: Shine Dome in Canberra
Since opening in 1959, the Shine Dome has been a bold symbol of Australian scientific ambition. Designed by renowned architect Sir Roy Grounds, the building is an iconic feat of mid-century engineering—its 710-tonne copper-clad concrete shell appears to float above a circular moat, supported by sixteen dramatic arches. Recognised internationally, it was the first building in Canberra to be placed on the National Heritage List, admired for both its innovative structure and symbolic significance.
Subtle Integration with Lasting Impact
To celebrate the architectural character of the dome after dark, the Australian Academy of Science sought a lighting solution that would highlight the arches without compromising the visual purity of the site. The challenge: install luminaires below the surface of the moat that could withstand constant submersion while delivering even, colorful illumination across the entire structure.
Lumascape provided a fully IP68-rated RGB lighting solution, engineered specifically for long-term underwater use. The compact projectors were discreetly installed on the moat floor, keeping hardware hidden from view. Their precise optics allow for uniform lighting across each concrete rib, creating a clean wash of colour around the full circumference of the dome.
A Vibrant New Layer for a National Landmark
The lighting brings new life to this beloved landmark, especially during public celebrations such as National Science Week, heritage anniversaries, and civic events. The RGB color capability offers dynamic flexibility, enabling the Academy to adapt the look of the dome for a variety of themes and occasions—without altering the integrity of the architecture.
What was once a daytime-only icon now carries its symbolic presence into the evening, with subtle yet striking lighting that enhances rather than overwhelms.
