Lighting the Heart of London with Precision and Power
Trafalgar Square is one of the most iconic public spaces in the United Kingdom and one of the most recognized city landmarks in the world. It is a central stage for national celebration, cultural gatherings, and historic moments. Surrounded by notable sites including the National Gallery, Nelson’s Column, and the four bronze lion sculptures that guard its base, the square remains a symbol of British heritage and civic life.
At its center, the fountains play a key role in the square’s visual identity. To enhance their presence after dark, Lumascape was selected to deliver a complete lighting upgrade for both the fountain basins and the sculptures.
Brighter Output, Vivid Color, and Improved White Light
The new system features 56 Woda Brass WB3 (LS5330 RGBW) in-grade luminaires, installed as point for point replacements in the pre-formed lighting pits surrounding the fountains. These compact, high-output fixtures deliver up to 1,530 lumens, providing significantly enhanced brightness and visual clarity.
While the saturated colors are now noticeably more vivid, the client was particularly impressed with the quality and uniformity of the white light, a key requirement for heritage locations where subtlety matters as much as performance.
Powered by PowerSync with Minimal Disruption
All luminaires are powered and controlled via PowerSync LV, Lumascape’s integrated power and control solution. Fixtures are wired into separate circuits, with cabling routed through existing ducts. This made it possible to reuse existing infrastructure and complete the installation without disturbing the public space.
Control is available via a local touchscreen or secure cloud access, offering total flexibility for public events, seasonal scenes, and adaptive lighting programming.
